• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert Clark -- A detailed and complex fantasy world : First, a warning. Gilraen and the Guilds, by J. R. Reid, is not a stand-alone book. It is the second book in her excellent trilogy Gilraen and the Doom of the Adjudicars. If you have not read the first book in the trilogy, Gilaren Returns, you will be at least half way through Gilraen and the Guilds before you have the vaguest idea what is going on. Gilraen and the Guilds begins slowly. A large number of characters are introduced, all eventually proving important. J. R. Reid did her research in areas like blacksmithing and medieval weapons making, and goes into enough detail to give a strong element of reality to her novel. Some readers might consider the detail excessive, at least until they see what it leads into. Gilaren and the Guilds builds on itself and on the first book of the trilogy, with little action until after the midpoint, but when the action starts the earlier background material comes into play, providing a strong framework for everything that follows. Is there a satisfactory ending? Of course not. A three act play doesn’t end after the second act. I f well done, it, correctly, leaves the reader anxious to find out how the story will end when the third book comes out. That is how J. R. Reid’s book Gilraen and the Guilds left me, and how I expect how it will leave most readers. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2021 )

Human man woman becomes, in video game. Gender-twisting, shape-shifting. Dha!! Why? Not sure. Not say. Elves, krelli (Yuck!), dwarves, sorcerers, Adjudicars, even Nymphs! Hard to tell which which is! Feel bad for simple humans, I do. Queen can use mind to travel, but only when no one looking. Otherwise must trudge through mud for days, they must. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chuzpah -- Excellent world building and an Epic world : This book continues the story of Gillian. She is preparing for war against another Adjudicar. The book has an epic feel from the start. The detail of the world is impressive. The attention to detail about the trades of each guild master was incredible. This book will appeal to high fantasy fans as well as anyone who loves GameLit crafting titles. As Gillian organizes the guilds to move across the rough terrain, you feel that there are real steaks for everyone involved. The tension builds slowly as the book progresses. There are some unresolved elements, but that is what the sequel will bring. Overall I found this to be a very satisfying continuation of the series. It is a lot less confusing as we have left the game lit genre and the characters are now fully integrated into their new fantasy world. We are dealing with humans and elves (dwarfs mentioned but not seen) so the reader doesn't have to juggle different worlds and societies plus the myriad mythical creatures that inhabit them. This makes the writing a lot tighter and easier to follow as this world gears up for an epic battle for the future of the planet. In this series you are gifted with a fantastical land, inhabited with magical species. The author has written a nail biting war that every saga needs! And it looks like there might be another story to satiate your want for more of this world and this story! If you're looking for a series to sink your teeth into, this is it. It flows nicely without lagging so the reader is thoroughly engrossed in the story. I may just start over with book one to pass the time while I wait for book 6!
