  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from alaskanchick -- but it is even better as an adult : I first read this in high school, but it is even better as an adult. I enjoyed the book as a good story when I was a teen, but the nuances revolving around the characters' relationships and interactions are what made me love it even more now. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from DebK -- Charming but sometimes nonsensical : This is a charming story, but I could not make up my mind whether it was written for children or adults, because it was so simplistic in its style. It did, however, hold my interest. I was particularly interested in the history of the setting and the time period. I did not know what the limberlost was when I picked up the book, but I learned to appreciate it. The last 20 pages (the denouement) were at times nonsensical with many twists and turns and non-sequitors. I’m guessing that the author was trying to build suspense, but it was jarring to the reader. The author veered off into detailed descriptions of children at play and seemed to abandon the main storyline and characters for inexplicable reasons. What the book lacked in effective writing, it made up for with a charming story and main character. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2020 )
  • from Diana D -- VINE VOICE : A window into atypical early 20th-century girlhood development ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Martin Grundy -- A charming and very American romance from a bygone era : This is the most entertaining and unusual book I have read for a while. It is a "coming of age" romance (bordering on melodrama) set in the fictional town of Onabasha (Indiana) in the early 1900's. Expect a lot of strong feelings and deep emotions. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Maxine Hopkinson -- One for the collection : This arrived today (26th April), and I look forward to reading it, as I have long been a fan of Gene Stratton-Porter's novels. The only reason I haven't awarded it 5 stars is that the print is a bit small - and rather than the font being an eye-friendly one such as Arial or Times New Roman, it seems to be Arial Light, which is more squashed together and a bit difficult to read. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tizz -- Re-read many years later : I read this (as a teenager I think) a great many years ago and really enjoyed it. Seeing the title recently, I remembered that I had read the book, but had no recollection of the story so bought it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2013 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Junket -- A girl of the Limberlost : My father spoke highly of this story which he read when a boy. Going through his possessions I came across this book, in very poor condition, hence my reason to purchase from Amazon. The story lives up to my expectations as a good story written by an author over 70 years ago and gives an interesting insight into the ways of life and word usage at that time. The girl, Elnora, funds her education collecting and selling moths ( nowadays probably endangered species) from the swamps near her home for mounting and selling to collectors. Elnoras's mother is embittered by her husbands behaviour who died in the swamp on the way to visit a girlfriend. She treats her daughter abominably in the first half of the story, and then reconciles with her daughter when a nice man appears on the scene who takes an interest in Elnora. That's as far as I have got! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2012 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from bookwormsu -- Excellent : A Girl of the Limberlost  I reread this with delight as I had first read it as a teenager. I loved the description of the Limberlost. The description of relationships is a bit "concealing" but this was a different century. I am reading "Freckles" now. Quite well formatted, certainly readable. However often the paragraphs are broken in the wrong place. OK for free. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 14, 2010 )
